Crazy Lady and (not) Her Cat

When the invincible becomes “vincible” It is not as if she has never heard of altitude. It is not as if she has never heard of altitude sickness. It is not as if she didn´t know of the importance of altitude acclimatization. It is not … Oh yes, she knew it all. Yet, this know-it-all world traveler (presumably), a well-educated...

The magic city – Cartagena

Inexplicable yet so fascinating how easily we can change the course of our lives (or at least our itinerary) when given the opportunity or when something pokes our interest, stimulates our senses, is aesthetically appealing or releases the free flow of emotions that make our pulse rise and the heart beat faster. One quick glance at a random picture that...

City of Eternal Spring – Medellin

Due to its proximity to the Equator, one would expect Colombia’s climate to be subtropical. One season – hot and humid the whole year around. And it is. It is hot and it is humid but only in some parts of the country. Near the Caribbean Sea. It is also true there is only one season, at least with regard...

It ain’t over till it’s over – Bogota

If there is anything locals and visitors to a ten million (plus) Colombian capital city,  Bogota, can always count on; it is:  The sun only shines in Bogota in the mornings – before 1 p.m. Each Sunday morning and early afternoon Ciclovía takes place in the city – a reclaim the streets type of event attracting up to 2 million...

Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morales

Isla Mujeres Of course, I couldn’t leave Mexico or even Cancun without visiting Isla Mujeres first – the very island I was advised to abandon Cancun for the minute I arrived. So, as soon as I came back from Havana I joined hundreds (maybe thousands) of other daytrippers and took a 13-kilometer long ferry ride to the island. Half an hour...

And the women are out shopping… AGAIN

Previous: WiFi Challenge I was aware of about food shortages and shopping difficulties before I came to Cuba and was, in fact, advised to bring at least a couple of boxes of breakfast cereal and dry soups as well as whatever clothes I no longer wanted, especially brands, to sell or exchange for accommodation. I didn’t bring either. Not sure...

WiFi, WiFi, a horse for a WiFi

First there was a past… then WiFi has come. There is the past and then there is the past. Cuba’s past is definitely the later. 50 years have gone (or is it 60?) yet the distinct feeling of Havana’s glamorous past and its former grandeur is still very much present. The former glitter is still pretty glittery although in bad need...

Every cloud has a silver lining – Havana

Yes, I am in Havana. And yes, they are really here. The cars. The best 50-year (incidental) investment the Cubans have made? Thanks to the ingenious engineering and likewise ingenious the need-is-the-mother-of-invention maintenance to keep them running these motorized horse powers tirelessly have served their masters for the past 50 years as any four-legged ones would.  But times they are...

Cancun – the all inclusive vacation factory

“As soon as you arrive at Cancun… LEAVE“. What? Leave the famous Cancun as soon as I arrive? This “one and only” dream destination and one of the world’s most hyped and hot vacation spots? Yes… leave… he insisted. “Go to Isla Mujeres instead“. This is the advice I got from a friend who knew Cancun inside out. And even...

One way ticket to Panama (?)

After a lifelong experience as an expat in 11 different countries around the world, I made the decision to move to Panama and embark on a new chapter of my life between the two oceans... or so I thought.

To make the long story short it took me 20 months and traversing through 21 countries to finally reach Panama. To head west, I first had to go east. But before I could even contemplate settling down, I had to meet the Lunch Lady who lived in entirely different part of the world. Intrigued? Confused? Read the entire story here.

But guess what? After finally making it to Panama, I realized I wasn't quite ready to embrace retirement just yet. So, after only 1.5 month off I went on a global escapade in search of my own personal paradise (retirement optional). Who knows? I might even find myself circling back to Panama again soon with a brand new tale to tell/write on that blank sheet of paper.

Flashpacker's Diary

Do you know what or who a flashpacker is? Neither did I. Only a few people do. But as you might have already guessed, a flashpacker is essentially a flashier version of a backpacker, or you can think of them as a (slightly older) backpacker with some means. And hey, that could very well be me.

Can a woman who is 60 years old or older, a solo traveler who has never embarked on any backpacking adventures before and doesn't even own a backpack, become a successful flashpacker? Without a doubt, she absolutely can. Not only can she do it, but she is actually doing it right at this very moment.

Email me if you like to meet up along the way

Whale watching in Oslob

Laundry in Oslob, Philippines

Oslob in August 2016, the Philippines Whale watching in Oslob is a big, big business. “Everybody” living in some 20-kilometer radius has a stake in that lucrative enterprise one way or the other. Competition is fierce. Thousands of tourists that visit Oslob come here for one reason and one reason only…

Siquijor, the Philippines in August 2016  After five days of ‘shopping’ and ‘partying the time has come to leave the great provincial city of Dumaguete. Have seen and done it all. Or so it felt. However, I wasn’t quite ready getting back to Cebu City and it was Cebu City…

August 2016 in Dumaguete City, the Philippines Who knew coming into town would be such a treat. But this is exactly what it was, even better. After months ‘on the road’, I the city girl was falling in love once again with walking on sidewalks, stopping at red lights, breathing…

Panglao, divers paradise

Panglao Island in the Philippines in August 2016 Sadly, I never returned to Bantayan. My nomadic blood put a stop to it. Or perhaps I wasn’t quite ready to return. ‘Almost there‘ isn’t exactly there. At least it wasn’t then. For there is no doubt in my mind that one…

Bantayan Island, the Philippines

Bantayan island in the Philippines, August 2016 The longer you live the beach lifestyle during your travels, especially in the tropics, the less ‘stuff’ in general and clothes, in particular, you will need. Greeting

July 2016 Ramadan – Islamic holy month, a month of physical and spiritual purification, a month of intense prayers to bring the faithful closer to god, a month of fasting to gain a better understanding and greater compassion towards the deprived, a month of donations and feeding the hungry.
